03 Our approach
Theory of Change
Expanding Access.
Building Opportunity.
Changing Systems.
The Virgil Abloh Foundation works to create a more equitable and inclusive creative economy by supporting young people from historically underrepresented communities. Young people from underrepresented communities, particularly BIPOC youth, face significant barriers to accessing opportunities, and entering and advancing within the creative industries.Despite their talent and ambition, the systems meant to nurture creative careers often work against them.We believe that when emerging creatives have access to resources, mentorship, networks, and sponsorship, they are more likely to enter, remain in, and lead within creative fields.
Many young creatives face overlapping barriers that limit access, persistence, and advancement in creative careers. These barriers restrict both entry into creative fields and long-term career growth.01. A lack of awareness and visibility of creative career pathways, such as what jobs exist, how to pursue them, and what success can look like.02. The absence of professional networks and soft skills, such as how to navigate informational interviews or access inside knowledge.03. Financial pressures and economic barriers, force many young creatives to choose stability over opportunity, cutting careers before they begin.04. Minimal exposure to mentorship, and real-world professional experience, which are essential for gaining confidence and credibility.05. Limited access toskill-building and training, from design software to studios and tools required to create, learn, and compete.06. A shortage of advocates in positions of power, such as executives willing to sponsor and champion underrepresented talent.
To address the evolving challenges young creatives face today, the Foundation invests in a connected system of support built around five core pillars.01. Funding & Grantmaking to expand access and financial stability02. Open Resources & Training to build skills and confidence03. Foundation-Led Programs & Workshops providing hands-on experience04. Partner-Led Programs to expand opportunity and reach05. Thought Leadership to influence industry practices and systemic changeTogether, these efforts advance the Foundation’s mission to open doors, break barriers, and support aspiring creatives from early exposure to long-term leadership − strengthening individual pathways while contributing to broader industry change. Through this ecosystem, participants gain the tools, confidence, and networks needed to access opportunity and sustain creative careers.Short-term impact reported by past program participants includes:01. New access to funding, tools, and training02. Expanded professional networks and industry connections03. Increased confidence and clarity around creative career pathways04. Measurable growth in technical skills across their core disciplinesThe Foundation envisions a creative industry where background does not limit opportunity. By investing in people, and systems, the Virgil Abloh Foundation helps today’s emerging creatives become tomorrow’s leaders.
